You are what you eat...

It makes intuitive sense to believe that the foods yuo eat literally shape the way you look. Try to picture a person who eats a diet of fast-food burgers and fries, pizza, potato chips and ice cream, and washes down everything with gallons of Coke. Now picture a person whose diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and fish and whole grains and whose beverages are limited to water and green tea. Chances are that in your mind's eye you saw Person 1 as overweight and flabby and Person 2 as trim and toned.

But do dietary choices show up on our skin? In 1970, Dr. Gerd Plewig conducted a study in which he gave one group of subjects chocolate and another group a placebo and found that the candy had no impact on the subjects' acne.(1) Ever since, dermatologists have been denying the existance of link between diet and skin problems like acne.(2) The American Academy plainly states that "acne is not caused by the foods you eat." But in recent years, more and more people have been noticing a causal link between acne outbreaks and the standard Western diet high in refined carbohydrates and fat - the research seems to suggest thet the old saying may indeed be true.(4) One of the dermatologists that have shouted for years that nutrition is crucial for healthy, clear and young-looking skin is Dr. Nicholas Perricone, who promises that the right diet, nutrional supplements and topical creams can dramtically slow down aging and prevent acne breakouts.
